What are dental bridges?

Dental bridges or “Permanent partial dentures” are a type of fixed dental appliances that literally “bridges” the gap left by missing teeth. They are used to replace one or more missing teeth. Because they are permanently attached to the teeth on either side of the gap, unlike dentures, they can only be safely removed by a dentist.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically implanted into the jaw bone to serve as a tooth root making a secure and stable foundation for an artificial tooth. Once the post is in a dental (Cap) will be place on top of the implant to serve as the artificial tooth replacement. This will give you a very similar appearance and feel to a natural tooth.

Caring for your dental implants and bridges

With both dental implants and bridges, treat them like your natural teeth by brushing and flossing and seeing your dentist regularly.

What option is right for me?

To determine which option is best for you it is best to talk to your family dentist. Both options have their advantages, but it really comes down to one’s oral health needs and financial situations.

Dental implants can be more invasive than dental bridges, however implants can appear and feel more natural than dental bridges. As well for any dental implant procedure to be successful you must have enough bone within your jaw to hold the implant in place. If you do not then you would need to have a bone grafting procedure done first to ensure that the implant can be supported. As a result, the implant process could take longer.
